I thought that the relationship between the design and function of Free Masonic Temples and their historical prototypes could deliver deeper insights into the astrogeographical typology of zodiac signs. My intended method of analysis is through astrological conclusions about problems of tension, discrepancies, antagonisms between form and content, educational, propagandist, allegoric, experimental and poster-like use of symbolism from both: serious esoteric studies as well as industrial, pseudo-emblematic, commercial or decorational use of esoteric symbols, titles and wordings.

The origins of Freemasonry – the Temple of Salomon as an iconic bridge

The term Freemasonry refers to fraternal organisations that trace their origins to late medieval European guilds of stonemasons that regulated the qualifications, education and work of stonemasons from the 12th and 13th centuries. During that era the foundation, development and growth of urban centers all across Europe led to the wave of construction of the large cathedrals (Roman and Gothic) accompanied by the establishment of large construction sites and the need for better educated masons and master masons (architects), carpenters and other skilled workers.

This early phase of the rise of the modern European civilization also brought with it a contact with information about the far superior Roman architecture and its roots in Greek, Egyptian and other high cultures. At this point of history the Temple of Salomon played an iconic role as a symbolical lighthouse and bridge that served to connect the imagination of Europeans with ancient history for purposes of esoteric identification, spiritual mystification and occultism. It can be assumed that the connected-ness of Salomon with the Bible and the ruling Christian state cults of Europe played an important role in the legalization of the orientation of early masonic engineering, teachings, and rituals with Greek and Egyptian architecture and spiritual knowledge.

Historical Data

Important known dates in the foundation process of the Free Masons that are known to the public are: the 1st known written account of the free-mason rules in the Halliwell Manuscript/Regius Poem written in 1390, the 1st known congregation in Scotland held on 31 July 1599 (Julian or Gregorian Date), the (or one of the) first Super Lodge(s) of England by unification of 4 smaller lodges on 24 Jun 1717 (Jul.), the publication of the Free Mason Constitution in the Postboy newspaper on 28 February 1723 (Jul.).

Free Mason Foundation Chart — A reliable foundation date for the Free Mason lodges, orders, congregations or other form of organisation is not known – or anyway not available for me. The above **Free Masons Foundation Chart calculated for the planetary positions on the Julian Date of 31 July 1599 at 12 noon** in Edinburg, Scotland was shown by Mrs Marjorie Orr.
Further investigation of this chart might come to the conclusion that the actual date on which the foundation was held was for the Gregorian Calendar introduced in Scotland in 1600 (1752 in England). These are my considerations: **A —-** the Gregorian date saw Jupiter near to exactly conjunct the Sun and mid-heaven at 12 noon. **B —** the same accounts for the chart for the first Grand Lodge of England on 24 June 1717 (Julian Date). **C —-** anyway dates were chosen when the Sun was conjunct Jupiter.

though the exact time is unknown to me the midday charts as indications of the central. mid-heavenly issues of light on that particular day appear to deliver a clear enough image for astrological evaluation of the intended issues of the Free Masons.

The “House of the Temple” in Washington as an icon

Free Masonry played an important role in the European Age of Enlightenment and in the foundation process of the USA. Between 1911 and 1915 the “House of the Temple” was built in the US capital Washington as the headquarters of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Southern Section. Together with the George Washington Masonic National Memorial outside Washington in Alexandria, Virginia it is one of the two major architectural icons that reflect this history in the Washington. In this context the astrogeographical position of the “House of the Temple” in Taurus with Capricorn is a clearest indication of its function as a monument dedicated to the stabilization of the state cult of the USA.

The free masonic “House of the Temple” was modeled after the “Tomb of Mausolus at Halicarnassus” (located in Scorpio with Gemini). The programmatic use of the design ideals of an over 2300 year old elite tomb with the predicate of a Wonder of the World ranking for a “Temple” speaks of a cult dedicated to the formal patterns of dead civilizations.

On the other hand there may be aspects that may be found (or projected into) the ancient “Halicarnassus Tomb Experiment” – mostly those concerning its educational purpose in the sense of technological and informational progress – that make the concept of quoting its ideals a source of inspiration for students.

House of the Temple in Washington — The House of the Temple in the US capital Washington, DC is an iconic building in the shape of a memorial to the influence of Free Masonry onto the American Revolution and Constitution. The building was designed by American architect John Russell Pope born April 24, 1874 with the Sun and a Mars-Venus-Pluto conjunction in Taurus.

Groundbreaking was celebrated on May 31, 1911 and the building was dedicated on October 18 1915. The chart below shows both events:

the position of Pluto the astrological indicator of role models and role patterns in Gemini indicates the resonance of the design concept of the DC temple with the structural concept manifested in the design of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus.—- the position of Jupiter the planet pf design, composition and success in Plutos own sign Scorpio the sign of sculpting, bunkers and of death is in conjunction with the South Node.
as indicator of inheritances the South Node may be examined here as an indication of the resonance of the DC Temple with the structural formalism of esoteric concepts and functions of the presentation of images of ancestor worship and tomb building for the purposes of state cult

Astrogeographical position for morphogenetic field level 4 (exact position) which describes the atmosphere and energetical topics of the building itself: The Scottish Rite of Freemasonry’s House of the Temple is located in the combination of solid, conservative, traditionalist earth sign Capricorn (stability, state cult, governments, solid ground, history, tradition). The 2nd coordinate is located in solid, fixed earth sign Taurus the sign of the earth, grounding, roots, agriculture, market-places, the center of society, income, money and the occupation, possession and control of territory.

Compare the examples of important central national temples in Capricorn with Taurus which were all dedicated to annual fertility rites and state cult and other buildings:

The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus

The “Tomb of Mausolus at Halicarnassus” – one of the 7 Wonders of the World was used as an emblematic design model for the “House of the Temple”.

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus or Tomb of Mausolus was a tomb built between 353 and 350 BC in Halicarnassus (Bodrum, Turkey) for Mausolus a satrap in the Achaemenid Empire and his sister-wife Artemisia II of Caria. It was one of the 7 Wonders of the World due to the perfection of its art work. The structure was designed by the Greek architects Satyros and Pythius of Priene.

The 2nd coordinate is in air sign Gemini the sign of intelligence, learning, schools, technology, language, symbols, sketching, curiosity, road crossings, duality, bringing opposites and antagonisms together and an indicator of the functions of art that are dedicated at passing and displaying information, at developing and testing technological achievements, at the stimulation of technological progress and at the testing and playful handling and trying out of potentials, possibilities and opportunities.

The depiction of a war (as in the amazon war freezes) between men and women on a tomb for a husband and his wife may be read as a reflection of their lives with one laughing eye (just one – as the other is in Scorpio 😉 ) or even as a caricature. Especially for a tomb built in playful sign Gemini.

A fascinating example of this this symptomatic element at places located in Gemini is the Jesus-Lookout – Tower at Lupeni, Transsilvania which too is located in Gemini with Scorpio. In that case the heaviness of the claim to the absoluteness of death and of the impact of traumatic experience therefrom is dealt with by offering an opportunity to look out at the world through the eyes of Jesus. Another example for such playfulness in Gemini is the Statue of Christ in “Cerro del Cubilete” located in Gemini with Virgo where Jesus in flanked by two playful twins offering him and/or the observer the choice between a thron crown and a royal crown.

The Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance

Another iconic building design using the proportions of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus is the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance built as a memorial to the men and women of Victoria who served in World War I. It was later made into a memorial to all Australians who have served in war. It was first unveiled on 11 November 1934.

Astrogeographical position for morphogenetic field level 4 (exact position) that describes the energetical topics of the building itself: the fact that the position of the Memorial is on the divide between different signs points at the priority of its function as a landmark in a large area of parkland called Kings Domain.

Particularly the resonance coordinate of the center of the building right on the cardinal divide of the autumn equinox between earth sign Virgo the sign of gardening, recreation, health, plants and protected places and air sign Libra the sign of the horizon, stage presentation, decoration, symmetry, balance, harmony. peace, beauty, justice and angels is an indication of this function of the building. 0° Libra can be observed here as the astrological simile for the horizon as the divide between earth and sky.

The 2nd resonance coordinate at the center of the building is right between highly dynamic fire sign Aries the sign of action, speed, mobilization and warfare and earth sign Taurus the sign of the center of society indicating the aim of of bringing the memory of common efforts and suffering right into the focus of the center of society. For this central aim of public memorials in Taurus compare the archetypal example of the central Berlin Holocaust Memorial with both resonance coordinates in Taurus.

The George Washington Masonic National Memorial

The George Washington Masonic National Memorial in Alexandria, Virginia near Washington D.C. was said to have been modeled after the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria one of the 7 Wonders of the World. The

The memorial is 333-foot (101 m) tall memorial and sits atop Shooter’s Hill. Construction began in 1922. The building was dedicated in 1932and the interior finally completed in 1970.

**George Washington Masonic National Building is located in the combination of Aries with Leo**, **The design model of the Lighthouse of Alexandria may be found to have been quoted in the 3 stages tower only. The 2nd coordinate is located in magnetic, royal fire sign Leo the sign of the sun, light, heart, gold, kingdom, power plants, energetical self-centering, self expression, the appeal for magnificence and of absolutism. The position in Leo resonates with the 27°Leo resonance coordinate of the capital Washington for morphogenetic field level 1 (international resonance), the super-centralism of the capital as such and also the institution of the King Presidents of which George Washington served as the first of the US Presidents. As the sign of light as such Leo may be examined also as an aspect of resonance with the concept of comparing George Washington and his work as a Freemason with the Lighthouse.

Alexandria Lighthouse 1909 model — The **1909 Reconstruction model of the Lighthouse of Alexandria by Professor Hermann Thiersch** **explains the standard of scientific information on the shape of the lighthouse long before the Washington Memorial was sketched.**

The differences between the astrogeographical positions of Washington Memorial in fire signs Leo and Aries (mobilization for action and self-expression) and of the design prototype of the Lighthouse of Alexandria in earth signs Taurus with Capricorn (stabilization through safe ground) can serve to explain the differences and antagonisms in the design approach and function of the two structures.

The Philadelphia Temple

The Masonic Temple of Philadelphia is the headquarters of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, Free and Accepted Masons. The construction was completed in 1873 after five years of construction. The design was created by Philadelphia architect James H. Windrim in the Medieval Norman style with allusions to cathedral and castle design.

The Masonic Temple was built right next to the site of the Philadelphia City Hall where construction work was begun in 1871 and completed in 1901. This prominent position was chosen to document the prominent role of the Freemasons in local politics.

Windrim was born on 4 January 1840 with Pluto in Aries the sign of warfare and strongholds as a potential indicator of a zeitgeist that related to Norman style, a conjunction of Sun and Moon in Capricorn the sign of government institutions, public buildings, tradition, history and state cult, Venus and Jupiter in Scorpio the sign of strongholds and an exact Mars-Neptune conjunction in Aquarius the sign of inspiration and re-connection with ones fuller potentials.

The interior design was created between 1887 and 1902 by interior designer and decorative painter George Herzog born 19 October 1851 with the Sun in Libra the sign of decoration, harmony, symmetry and naive painting.

An outstanding line of aspects in Herzog`s birth planets was a Saturn, Uranus, Pluto conjunction on the first degrees of Taurus the sign of money, income, market places and the conquest, occupation and possession of land as an indication of his perspective on the zeitgeist in opposition to a Venus-Jupiter conjunction on the first degrees of Scorpio the sign of sculpting, imaging, visualization, photography and practical artwork.

Astrogeographical position for morphogenetic field level 4 (exact position) that describes the energetical topics of the building itself: one resonance coordinate is in highly energetic, magnetic, royal fire sign Leo the sign of the sun, light, heart, gold, kingdom, power plants, energetical self-centering, self expression, the appeal for magnificence and of absolutism. Leo is of importance here also as the one of the 2 astrogeographical resonance signs of Washington.

Important examples of buildings that resonate with the important role of Philadelphia in the foundation process of the USA are: the Statue of Liberty, The US Capitol Building in Washington, Independence Hall in Philadelphia where the US Declaration of Independence and Constitution were signed by the way is located in Leo with Aquarius.

Freemasons Hall in London

The site of Freemasons’ Hall in London, headquarters of the United Grand Lodge of England has been a Masonic meeting place since 1775. There have been three Masonic buildings on the site, The current building was constructed between 1927 and 1933 during the 7 -year period of Uranus last transit through fire sign Aries the sign of warfare (1927-34). This parallel transit is important for observations on the affinity of Free Masons with state cult and possibly also with the history of British-Russian relationships as it coincided with the first of the two eras of the rise of European fascism (2nd Uranus transit in Aries was between 2011 and 2018).

The building was designed in the art deco style by architects Henry Victor Ashley and F. Winton Newman as a memorial to 3,225 Freemasons who died on active service in World War I.. Initially known as the Masonic Peace Memorial the name was changed to Freemasons’ Hall at the outbreak of the World War II in 1939.
