Cancer and Virgo – Jokhang Temple in Lhasa
The Jokhang is supposed to have been founded during the reign of King Songtsen Gampo. the 33rd tibetan king and founder of the Tibetan Empire. According to tradition legends the temple was built for the king’s two brides: Princess Wencheng of the Chinese Tang dynasty and Princess Bhrikuti of Nepal who brought important Buddhist statues and images from China and Nepal to Tibet, which were housed in the Jokhang. The oldest part of the temple was built in 652.
Astrogeographic position for morphogenetic field level 3 which describes the atmosphere, energetical topics and how the temple and surrounding area are embeddeed in the City of Lhasa: Jokhang Temple is located in the astrological combination of self-protective, cautious earth sign Virgo sign of reason, health, herbal medecine, plants, self-healing, cleaning, celibacy and monk and yoga culture with emotional water sign Cancer sign of motherhood, fertility, pregnancy, the uterus, emotional individuality, feeling at home, milk, lakes and water springs.
Before the construction of the temple the so called “Milk Lake” (Cancer) that originally covered the site was drained (Virgo). Lakes and milk are among the most important allegories for the sign Cancer, whereas draining is a central motif of the sign of Virgo which in psychological terms stands for analyzing, processing and regulating individual emotion. The central psychological topic of Cancer should be seen in individual emotional perception and subjectivism, self-identification, emotional independence, emotional self-protection and indvidualization.
The overall picture of the combination of Cancer with Virgo can be regarded as a great indication for understanding Tibetan Buddhism. This is so because the sign Virgo is the most important astrological archetype to describe Indian (Hindu= monk and yoga culture while Cancer`s main quality lies in the focus on personal and individual perception and development. The Tibetan meditation technique of Vipassana can so be understood as a good example of how the constellation of Cancer with Virgo describes central motifs of monk culture. In Vipassana the meditation is to concentrate on watching the effects (“drying the lake of one`s emotional chaos”) that perceptions, experiences and thoughts have on the world of one`s emotions in order to practice awareness about the causes and reflexes of ones individual emotions.
